The tasks of the Department of Art are research into contemporary art and art education and the provision of research-based graduate and post-graduate training of art pedagogues and professionals and experts in contemporary art. Among the core tasks of the department are high-quality artistic and art pedagogical activities that have both national and international effectiveness on all levels of society.
The Unit for General Studies (YoYo) of Aalto University School of Art and Design situated at the department organises and coordinates general art studies and studies on the history and theory of art and design common to all departments of the School of Art and Design. In collaboration with other parties, the Unit for General Studies also coordinates studies in information and communication technology, compulsory and optional language studies and studies associated with research proficiency.
