Master's Degree Programme in Art Education for Professionals

The main subject in the Degree Programme in Art Education is visual culture education. In the degree programme, visual culture is approached through the viewpoints of art, pedagogy and research. The aim of the education is to provide the student with a diversified set of skills and knowledge in the various aspects of fine arts and other visual culture and an up-to-date and carefully-selected combination of knowledge and abilities on art as a teaching subject.

A master’s degree in art education provides qualifications for teaching art in comprehensive schools, high schools, vocational education, teacher training institutions, art schools for children and young people, museums and liberal adult education, among others. In addition, the degree provides the capacity to operate in expert positions of art pedagogy, for example in the field of visual culture, organisations in the realm of culture and social services and the business world. The pedagogical expertise provided by the programme supports teaching work in new learning environments in the field of visual culture.

Students admitted in the programme are required to have BA or equivalent level basic education in either art or pedagogy and previous teaching experience. The Art Education MA Programme for Professionals enables the students to complete a Master's degree (180 ECTS) in two or three years. The aim of the studies is to deepen the students’ command of art education as a teaching subject and their pedagogical thinking. The studies are based on a personal study plan, which includes the possibility of accrediting earlier studies as part of the degree.
