Pori unit

The task of the Pori Unit of the Department of Art is to provide teaching and carry out research in visual culture and in the processes of creative economy. The Pori Unit has two Master’s degree programmes: Master’s Degree Programme in Visual Culture and Master’s Degree Programme in Creative Business Management. The latter one is offered jointly with the School of Economics of the University of Turku. The Unit also offers post-graduate programmes leading to the Doctor of Arts Degree and is involved in research projects funded by the Academy of Finland and the EU.

The Pori Unit of the Department of Art is located in the University Consortium of Pori and shares the facility with units of the Tampere University of Technology, University of Tampere and University of Turku. The University Consortium of Pori is a multidisciplinary science and art community of four universities operating in a networked manner. It allows the participating universities to pursue content-related cooperation in the areas of cultural research, social sciences, economics and technology. The system of interdisciplinary studies allows students to study in more than one unit of the University Consortium. The Pori Unit also cooperates closely with other units of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and with other art universities.

The focus in the teaching at the Pori Unit of the Department of Art is on the interaction between critical thinking and artistic and creative activities. The activities are based on contextual awareness, regional and social interaction and the international dimension. The research and teaching focus is on the examination of the context of art and media and on making them more widely accessible, on the location-based approach and on experimental interventions. New experimental research, teaching and project facilities in the old Pori cotton mill are also part of the social interaction promoted by the unit.
